Essential Processes in Cement Concrete Construction
Cement is a commonly used man made product. Cement is a core material used in the construction of buildings and structures like bridges, dams and roads. Some of the materials that make up concrete include water, cement, gravel and sand. Cement is a major component in forming concrete and without cement the concrete cannot be made. In the presence of water, cement is used in joining together gravel and sand.
Concrete made up of reinforcement bars is refereed as reinforced cement concrete. Steel and cement are good materials in holding the concrete together because they are very strong and they can be acquired at a cheaper price. To achieve high quality concrete, there are certain steps and procedures which must be followed.
The amounts and proportions of the material requirements must be determined. These proportions include the type of cement, the type of aggregate and its size, the water amount, chemical mixtures. To have a concrete that generates good results it is important to establish this requirements. After getting the ingredients in place, it is now essential to determine the most appropriate design mix. Evaluating the needed traits and properties of the concrete is essential while still observing the economic factors. The load must be well supported since the concrete should remain strong. Workability can be explained as the ability of the concrete to spread out when put on a flat surface.
The condition of the environment where the concrete is to be put should be considered. A good concrete should be made in a way that it does not freeze under cold conditions or melt under hot weather conditions. There should be resistance to moisture and harsh soil elements. Another factor is the surface wear which means that the upper layer of the concrete should not easily wear out in order for the structure too last long and be durable to serve its intended purpose.
After making the necessary considerations, it is time to mix the ingredients. The contractor should not under mix the ingredients because it leads to weaknesses.
If the construction site is near the mixing site then placing is done through pouring. If the distance is close, then buckets and cranes can be used but if the distance is long trucks are used and this make the ready mix concrete price to rise. Consolidation aims at eliminating any air gaps. The compacting by rollers should be done carefully and should not be overdone. Finishing is the second last activity of cement concrete construction and it involves adjusting the appearance of the concrete which can be the floor in this case. To achieve the required properties and reduce the concrete’s vulnerbility, the surface is allowed to cure.
